Packing a shade

#1

Post by Hot_Diggity »

I was really impressed with the packaging of this 306 shade that I got in the mail today. Foam pipe wrap around the bottom with a single piece of tape to hold the ends together. Then a top piece that was wrapped with saran wrap, but had the ends clearly evident, so unwrapping was a pleasure. It looked like a bicycle helmet, and was suspended in a box of Styrofoam peanuts. I probably could've kicked it around the parking lot and not hurt it.

That's a good idea Chuck! I've got a couple on their way this week. Fingers crossed they make it! Always nerve wracking waiting on precious glass to come in the mail.

I've got a box around here somewhere that one of the glass shade manufacturer used. It's a simple folded insert for the box with a hole in the center to hold the shade. Cardboard fingers that radiate from the center hold the shade fast and provide shock absorption. Simple, light, and brilliant.

Every time I hear a 306 shade ring I marvel at how delicate they are and yet how tough. My CQ named Lucky and her 306 shade went from New York to California and back before heading my way in the same ratty box. No more padding than a few wads of newspaper and with a fount half full of gasoline, the lamp and shade arrived intact.
