229 find Monday

#1

Post by TSPORT »

Picked up this 229 Dual Fuel on Monday from a CL ad. Seller scrounged up 3 packs of #20 mantles and a partial bottle of Coleman fuel to go with the lantern and the MSR bottle that was listed. Has a chip in the vent and needs a globe but I will try the super glue repair. Has a large crack running circumferentially (word?). My guess is that this exact style globe is probably made from unobtanium. All I see available is clear glass ones.
Oh well, not a bad score for $10.

Nice! Yeah I would have snagged that for $10. Great running little lanterns.

Super score! That globe is difficult to find. It’s my favorite globe for those little guys.

I have a 226 with the picket fence globe that was cracked vertically and the PO put scotch tape on it. The globe survived but the tape turned nasty black after 45 minutes of use.

I think maybe Timm has had success with supergluing globes in the past? Can’t remember who it was for sure.

Good score! Try the super glue and let us know how it works. I've done it successfully on larger globes further from the heat, but never on anything this small and close to the mantle.

The seller said he had replaced all the seals at one time so I will add some fresh fuel and see if/how it runs before messing with.

Check for similar Coleman propane lanterns of the same style - they used the same globes.

There are different styles of those small frosted globes.

I have even seen some amber ones, but they are super rare.

Wow. Too bad about that globe. I've never seen that style before.

Keep looking around for the propane version of a 226 with the black vent. They come with a picket fence style globe. I've bought a couple of those just to get the globe.

Nice score, definitely worth $10. I did the super glue trick on a CL2 that has a small crack and it’s not split any farther since. Best of luck, that globe is really cool.

Well, the 229 fired up just fine the other day with the fuel that was in it and the control valve operates nicely.
Looks like just a clean up and new globe is in order. The cracks on the existing globe are extensive. By the way, for those that have done it, how do you get the super glue in the crack without making a mess? Thanks!

Great score. They're cute little lanterns.

You certainly did well. Heck, those MSR bottles alone sell for $15 to $20.

Yes, super glue will do a great job of keeping the globe intact. I just haven't had any luck holding one together once a piece has separated. You do want to wait for the glue to cure for best results. If you can grab a clear globe, even for $10, you may want to jump on that. They aren't making those anymore.

I have a bunch of the clear NOS globes if you need one.

The globe you have now is very hard to find. They only put that globe on that color 229 for a short period of time. There were a total of 3 different globes used on the Silver 229.

Thanks for the offer, Dan. They have the globes on Amazon for $10 or $11 and free ship on Prime. Shipping for yours would probably be close to that. I have three of these little guys now, 2 with good globes so I’m in no hurry. Will probably check at the Coleman outlet next time I am over that way. They always have something I don’t expect to see.
