Kamplite “Pinky “ collection discussion.

#1

Post by 25_502s »

I’ve always liked the Kamplite pinkies, I guess because they are different and not real common. I think they were available only one year??? I recently saw a single mantle with the box and on top of the box it read “ GOLD BOND GIFT CENTER “. That brought up a bunch of questions. Was this a reward for gold bond stamps much like Coleman’s gold bond collection? If it was a reward was the Pinky the only choice you had or were the regular Kamplites available?? The main question being if this was a reward for collecting stamps was the pinky collection exclusively offerd to stamp collectors or could the general public buy them?? That could explain the 1 year only availability and the scarcity of them. Anyway curious if the experts had more info on the subject.

No expert here, but the 'Pinky' is generally believed to have been available for only one year: 1960. I have one that was rebadged for Herter's. I've looked and looked, but never ran across an ad from Herter's showing the Pinky. On rare occasions, I see Herter's catalogs from that timeframe, but don't know exactly which catalog it would be in as they had a few different ones. At ebay prices, I'd have to be certain the ad is in there first.

The Gold Bond stamps were given out and the quantity was based on how much you spent at the grocery store that was offering them. My mom rarely shopped at a store that gave out the Gold Bond stamps. :(

I've not heard of a Gold Bond pinky. That would make it special.

Jim, is the Herter’s decal a water slide or a vinyl stick on style? I don’t remember gold bond stamps around here, only S&H.

I don't know decals, but I'd guess you would call it a water slide. It's definitely not a sticker.

S&H was the big one. I wouldn't be able to recall which store(s) offered Gold Bond, but they were either too far away from us or too high priced, so S&H is generally what I got. I don't recall ever wanting anything from the S&H catalog, but maybe I just never accumulated enough stamps to get what I wanted.

Looking up Gold Bond, it appears that they started back in the late 30's, so anything's possible as far as what they offered over time.

Here's my pinky and the Herter's rebadge.

That definitely looks like a waterslide or at least like it came on the lantern. I was thinking since yours is the only one I’ve heard of that maybe someone removed the Kamplite decal and put the herters on there. But seeing it that definitely appears to not be the case. Looks original.

No doubt in my mind it came that way. These Herter's badged ones occasionally pop up on ebay. Plus, a member or two on the forum also have them. I bet this 'Pinky' thread draws them out. :)

Those pinkys rusted like crazy. It is tough to find a rust-free good example.

I’ve noticed that. I wonder if they rushed the paint formula and didn’t do adequate testing?

If you have a nice pinky, it might be worth clear coating it.

Only one LRL22 here as well. I made a lantern box to protect it when hauling it around.
