New hobbies while under lockdown
New hobbies while under lockdown
Hey good people. Since a lot of us have had some of our pursuits come to a screeching halt, I was wondering if any of you all had taken up any new at home hobbies during the lockdown. Not increase something you have been doing, but something entirely different. A lot of people have had things they liked to do shut down. Music concerts was a big thing for me and Amy, and that ain't happening anymore.
For example I started playing on line chess once or twice everyday. Haven't played chess since high school,(that's a long time ago) and discovered I still enjoy it. The website Chess.com has different level bots you can play for free, and lessons if you wish. Gives the brain some exercise, and if I can improve my game, that's plenty good enough for me.
Lemme know what has been working for you.

Jigsaw puzzles.
I hadn't done one since I was 10. I used to do them with my mom.
It's great brain exercise and it gets me away from screens. I love it.

Not new, but started throwing axes again. Picked up a Flying Fox from Whiskey River. Great folks and ship super fast. If you sign up for the news letter, they let you know when axes go on sale. This $49 throwing axe, was $39 on sale. Council Tool has extreme quality for good prices. A lot of fun for just a few bucks.

Working at home has allowed me to get more into my new audiophile hobby. Upgrading my system and adding some new vinyl to the collection. Plus just a lot of time to listen to music.

We never did any lockdown, so I just went to work as usual. 2A essential worker. I may have picked up the pace on my beer bottle cap collecting.

I discovered more than I thought possible about the humble compact cassette... I never saw a type IV before about a month ago, now I'm trying to decide what to record onto a half dozen I found.

It's all about a GOOD tripod, and if possible, a tracking movement (Not sure what they actually call the gizmo) and filters, particularly for the moon...

Re: New hobbies while under lockdown
yeah ive spent many many hours trying to decide what to get. It makes my head spin sometimes. What i have learned is there is no one scope that can do it all perfect. leaning towards a reflector. Atleast a 5"

Most dangerous hobby would be catching axes.
It's priceless until someone puts a price on it.

A 4" Schmidt-Cassegrain can also make for a nice spotting scope. Anything larger gets unwieldy. I used to carry a 4" Meade as a field scope when doing bird work and it was bulky, but light. Mounted on a rifle stock, it was great, but a tripod would be better.
Equatorial mount is what you want for astro. Most are computerized now and are pretty slick. Set-up isn't what it used to be.

Re: New hobbies while under lockdown
I've been getting rid of hobbies over the last couple of years to focus on the ones I enjoy the most. So no new ones for me. And I was truly blessed that work picked up for me. Overtime was plentiful, didn't need approval. So I worked a ton of hours through the biggest part of the " lock down"

Re: New hobbies while under lockdown
Only really have two Hobbies the lanterns and stoves and then my weapons (guns) but I've kind of backed off on the guns a bit as I am starting to run low on powder and large rifle primer still have plenty but just slowing it it down a bit until powder and primers become a little bit more readily available than they are now.
