El Mirage season opening 2021

#1

Post by A Seabee »

Just got back from 2 nights out in the Mojave Desert. winds steady at 25 mph yesterday, gusts up to 40+ last night, but many records were broken. I have electric and propane in my little camper, but nothing beats 1940's camping gear.

this car went 226 mph (I think) made out of a WW2 P-38 drop tank

A lot of history has been made there on that dry lake bed to go along with your 1940s camping gear CM1. Exciting good times and tons of fun.

Geez, I know! this was my 1st trip there and it was really an experience. Everything the rest of the world threw away ends up there, and Bonneville. And the nicest people you could ever meet are involved in land speed racing! I have been to the Salt Flats a few times for Speed Week. Amazing experience!

Glad you were able to get out to the wide open Mojave. Your post reminded me of this:

when you say "Mojave" I always think of Muroc. But I guess El Mirage is in the Mojave too, sort of. I've never attended an SCTA meet at El Mirage but I did go to several of the Muroc reunions. Enjoyed them.

When I think of Mojave, I think of 29 Palms, Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, Highway 62. But...the area surrounding El Mirage is genuine Mojave desert. the town of Phelan, just a few miles away from the lakebed, has more Joshua trees than I have ever seen!
