Turban fount find

#1

Post by Recoil »

I had fallen off the Coleman collecting wagon for a few months but this find helped me get back into it.

Sitting all lonely like on a table at a garage sale, with a good old fashioned garage sale price tag!
This is an interesting lamp as it was obviously well looked after its entire life. The cap nut on top is interesting...never seen one like that before. The upper frame is also unique, or at least it is to me. Any comments on these items or anything else about this lamp would be appreciate. Date? 1919 ish?
Pictures say 1000 words so here goes...

Yep... You win!! That's an early 307 shade also!! Appears to be an arc style burner. Beautiful piece!!

The shade has a little damage up high on the collar that I shamefully hid when I took the photo but no doubt it is original. It is eggshell thin and very fragile. I dont really know about that burner setup. Think it is original? The lamp does not look molested at all but I am unsure. It is early for sure.

I'm fairly certain that's all original and if I remember correctly it could easily be a kero burner from the mid to late teens...

Altho I'm thinking those were ker-o-lites 🤔

It is an “AVK”
A - is the fount designation
V - is the arc burner designation
K - is designation adjusted for kerosene.

That’s a very rare lamp and the early shade. I think it’s a Kero burner.

It’s a

Thank you!

Yes for the earlier production, then they transitioned to a more familiar design but same size thread (larger than Quicklite type)

. OK this shows both early n late style burner frames . double click it for better viewing . that is a super nice find , id be all excited :-) so to my understanding you need to look at the gas tip marking and see if its marked for CF or kero ? dont recal the markings off the top of my head . one is an Arc tip ,

Steve, I am plenty excited trust me. It snapped me back into the sickness...lol.

I do not know how this shade has not split in half. It is cracked all the way down. I am going to try crazy glue it and hope it can be used as a display piece. Just before I grabbed the lamp another guy was manhandling it like crazy....shocked it is still together!

I have collected MANY lamps from this area and can tell you this is not a common style lamp to find around here. This was poor farmer country and most lamps reflected that fact. I am going to go back to the owner and ask if he has any info on it.

So my 1919 guess is still a valid option I think?

On the contrary...this lamp is nearly perfect. Some old lady was painfully protective of this lamp after she bought it. I would suggest it is nealry flawless.except the cracked shade.

it is missing one thing , the upper shade holder . with it it hold the shade pretty secure . without it its easy to why its cracked , its too easy to flop around like this . the upper piece is part of a sandwich that holds it all together snug . you can sorta see it in the pic on the left .

Do you have a photo of said holder Steve? If it is what I think it is, it is there as well but the little "wings" designed to hold the glass were bent in so it was just sitting on the inside of the glass collar. That makes total sense Steve. Will carefully bend back and try fit it after I glue the shade. In the sixth photo on my original post it can be seen but isnt clear since it was bent in.

I am a bit intimidated on fettling this thing as the frame is completely foreign to me and the condition it is in now is immaculate. However, would love to see it lit again too.

Thanks for all the help with the identification and happy hunting! Never know what is around the next bend or at the next garage sale.

Nobody likes a coward. Tore it down...mostly. everything came apart very easily. Haven't tackled the "football goal post" style upper supports on the burner frame as they are tight and I am not too sure how to proceed on them yet. Really stunning condition considering age and the fact it shows no signs of fettling. No tool marks, dents or dings. Really pleased with this piece.

That is such a stellar find and would make a lamp loon out of just about anyone! Also Steve R has told me that the tiny screw on top is extremely HTF all by itself in any case. Thanks for sharing!!

gota go one step further :-) n take off the nut that holds the fount ID disk off n look under there ? often these old un molested ones have a fragile paper label or tag under the disc , like a builders ID number . that hasent actually been determined but its sure cool to see ??? everything else is there , i think this is un molested . they sometimes disintegrate looking at em so take photos , or dont bother :-) just a super cool find :-)

I found the same style lamp at the flea market Saturday. It had been updated with the CQ style burner. The ID plate was rusty so I threw it in some evaporust and this is what it revealed. Not a Coleman after all.
