Kero-Lite Registry

#1

Post by Hot_Diggity »

I'd like to introduce a CCF Coleman Kero-Lite 160 registry. Or for the Kero-Lite aficionado, simply "The Registry."

I have three goals in mind.

1. Establish how many of these lamps are known to still exist. (at least here)
2. To share information about the history, operation and restoration of these lamps.
3. To provide a place CCF members can go to help each other complete more of these wonderful lamps.

I'm not a spreadsheet kind of guy, so don't expect anything fancy, but I think I can keep track of members registration numbers and the numbers of lamps. Larry (coleman54) does such a wonderful job on so many other popular "signature groups," syndicates and savers groups. I'm only going to try this one since the numbers are small enough, I think, to keep it manageable.

I'll try to keep the numbers in a separate file, using the old stubby pencil back-up system. I'd really love to read more details of legal issues between Coleman and Aladdin. It really was a poke in the eye for them. If you have anything you'd like to share about the Kero-Lite and don't want to create your own thread, feel free to share it here. If it gets too confusing for me to track, I'll let you know.

I'll take number 1 to keep things simple and I've already had a request for number 2. I know a few others out there that may want to participate, but I will let them chime in, post a picture of their lamp and pick their number, or take the next one that comes up. If you have multiple lamps we'll add that to the separate lamp count. We'll try to count pieces as individual lamps if you know, for instance, that the burner survived but the base is known to be broken. I have one like that, and have had orphan bases where the burner was lost. If a base came from Alberta and a burner from Dallas, it's reasonable to count that as two.

Having fun yet?

I've checked with the moderators, and there can be no offers of sales or trades within the thread. You'll have to communicate via PM or post your item in the classifieds.
We will see how it works out, but I suspect the thread will generate some interesting results when the guys with only burners meet the guys with only bases.

No, this is not a Wickie Wednesday thing. The Kero-Lite is a mantle lamp, and Coleman's only non-pressurized kerosene mantle lamp. Most sources report that approximately five thousand Kero-Lite 160 lamps were produced between 1938 and the end of production during World War II. There were little if any changes to the design throughout that time. It was already perfect. No changes were needed.

Others agree with my assessment that the Kero-Lite is more refined than the competition of the time, or anything made since. Other non-pressurized mantle lamps may boast greater light output, or have more decorative designs, but none I've tested do the job of making light any better than the Kero-Lite.

I'll kick the registry off:

I'll take #4. I am making a road trip today to pick mine up. Is has a Coleman Sunshine logo on the chimney, I am assuming that would be hard to replace

Got you set up with number 4 Kirk.

Yes, the original chimneys are hard to find, and the Coleman Snap-on design requires a little care to avoid breakage. Just make sure you hold the gallery down on a solid surface when removing or installing the chimney.

Shade looks great too.

Thanks for the number Chuck. I do have just the one, but it consists of parts of two as the font is from your neck of the woods and the burner from up north. Altho the burner actually looked NOS... Not sure if Coleman ever offered those? Great looking lamps everyone 👍

Toby, part number 160-375 was the complete burner with wick. It was $4.95 in 1938. How many would you like?

Any other tips for transporting the lantern this will be the first time I have handled one and it would tear me up to break something

Put me down for #5 I guess. I have 2 Kero-lite's.

W.T. Kirkman sells the reproduction shade holders, that need tweaking to get the shade to sit right. They also sell the reproduction chimney that has the Coleman logo etched into the glass. The original is painted? The quality is iffy on getting a chimney that will sit right with out looking like it is leaning. I should have sent the chimney on the right back but just kinda forgot about it,,,lol.

Hey, there's Quick_Cal. Got you down for #5

If you think the chimney being crooked is troubling, try a base that's leaning to one side. I had to retire this one. I call it I-Lean. Can't help overheating one side of the chimney and I got tired of trying to level it. You can look at the fuel level and see how far off it is. It's the only one I've ever seen that's like this, but you can bet I check every new one I find.

Take a look at the mounting surface inside the gallery. The fingers are soldered on and that area is a bed of solder. You may be able to level it and get the chimney to sit right.
If the chimney isn't square at the bottom I'd sure send it back. Kirkman's latest laser engraving is in the original Coleman location and was good enough to fool me when I first saw it. I'd try contacting Madison Kirkman first (sales@laternnet.com) and send her a picture of the lean. I doubt they'd want the old one back, and they may send you one of the new ones. :D

In a basket counts. I'd say anything more than half should count. Not a lot off stray parts kicking around.

What's worse Greg, looking for a complete burner or having one that's mostly intact but hopelessly corroded together? Or is it better to be missing a flame flange? Maybe with a toothless or two tooth wick riser pinion, missing rack, rotted wick, or missing flame spreader or gallery?

You canswap an Aladdin flame spreader and gallery onto the Kero-Lite burner with minor fitting, and the Kero-Laddin will make decent light. The right Aladdin wick will fit, but in some ways, the closer you get to completion with these, the harder that one part seems to be to find.

Thoughts?

Added one more to the incomplete list recently. Will probably end up as a Kero-lladin conversion using an early heeless Aladdin gallery.

That's a lovely trio Bill. Got you down for three as number 11.

That's the first original shade holder I've seen other than on Terry's site. I'd be interested to see how it compares dimensionally to Kirkman's reproductions.
I've made one myself, out of smaller steel since I couldn't find any just right. Simple looking design, but reproducing the bends really helps you appreciate the details.

Aladdin shades fit fine while you're on the hunt for an original.

Happy Thanksgiving John, and John.

Would love to see some pictures when you can.

One tooth missing isn't so bad. When you get down to just two teeth left the wick adjustment becomes a bit of a challenge.

I'll add you to the count. 😁

I’m not sure how the Kirkmans looks, but the reproduction holder that Ronnie made are identical. He even stamped his initials in them so nobody could try to pass them as original.

I'm undecided on running original chimneys.
Given the option I'd probably keep it on a display lamp and run a reproduction chimney.
