Mom and Dad's 220E and 443 from the early 60's are still going strong. Just a little PM every year or so and they are the Timex of GPA's. The take a licking and keep on ticking!

With the older needle-type valved items, there's so little to go wrong with them. It's likely the fount will be the item that fails before anything else. I've seen plenty of real oldies running just fine.

I regularly light my fettles, and it always amazes me the issues I find a few months down the road. Usually it's just a check valve or a pump cup needs to be redone (probably did't do it right the first time).

When I go camping my lanterns and stoves are all from the forties and fifties. My backup stove is from the early sixties.
Coleman stuff lasts forever if maintained.

8 years ago I took my '63 502 stove on it's golden anniversary tour of about 10,000 miles. Looking forward to taking it on it's 60th birthday tour in 2023, 15,000 miles this time. It was the only stove that I took, I have that much confidence in it.

Treated correctly............ they'll last a lifetime. Mantels and fuel pump cap gaskets will fail. But these were made before the concept of designed obsolescence was part of the zeitgeist.

Older designs will out last me. With very little maintenance lot added parts.

Newer models last as long as an O ring. :D

Let's see... I have four lanterns that are over 100 years in age. All run perfectly. One has had the fount replaced.

My oldest stoves are from the early '30s. They still do what they do so well.

I've been surprised at how long a mantle will last if ya don't beat it up. I know this isn't a record or anything, but my back-porch user has got mantles going on 2 years now and they're still perfect. Trust me, that lantern gets USED. It's my primary light for cooking or going out in the back yard. I've got a table lamp that has had bugs trying to hit the mantle for almost a year now, and it's also fine.

Have to say i'm impressed at their durability.

You may want to define 'something breaks'. A mantle can last from seconds to years. The 200A in my car kit still has the Coleman mantle it had on it a few years ago. A globe can break, typically out of carelessness. Other than that, I consider it all maintenance.

If you're one that has issues with a mantle prematurely breaking, I suggest trying what a Peerless rep told me a few years back, and that is, after burn-in, to light a new mantle with very low pressure. After that, pump it up all you want.

The oldest one I have that I know the full history on was my dad's 1973 228F. It has had many mantels. I changed out the original globe a few years ago for an amber one. Still has the original fuel cap gasket, but I'm betting that will need replacing soon...

I have a 1919 lamp that only needed a fuel cap gasket to run.

If you need a Sun Flame Generator Model 100-107 ( for Sunflame lanterns models 105, 106, 107 and 110) give me a PM, I have close to 80 of those, 15 bucks each.

I'm gonna say 30 years for post-1975 GPAs with a schrader valve. That's about how long it was from the time I bought my 400A and 290A before they needed schrader valves. Otherwise, nothing has ever broken on them.

Back in the day Coleman was a name well recognized and a brand people could trust. Other than replacement of consumable parts, i.e. mantles, filler cap gaskets, an occasional leather pump cup maybe a broken or cracked globe now and then; Coleman lantern and stoves have been cooking meals and providing light for generations. Properly maintained and cared for I think any Coleman stove or lantern made prior to the mid 1970s can be depended upon for decades of faithful service.

Wonder who it was that thought a good idea was to replace the leather pump cup with those things, some bean counter maybe? "If it works, don't try to fix it."

I think the bottom line answer is for a properly maintained GPA (replacing consumable parts) is:

We don't know how long they will last, they have not been around long enough. With minor exceptions, if not abused they have not seen an "end of life".

One exception: certain brand brass founts have stress cracking issues. That's a design/manufacturing problem, not a GPA general problem.

If you're using clean fuel I'm thinking the only thing that will ever go wrong is a dry pump cup or fuel cap seal. Oil the pump and replace the seal and you should be good to go.

Before something breaks on it? Hmmm, I once bought a 288 lantern from a Craigslist ad, brought it home, took off the vent to check something, then promptly turned the lantern upside down to read the date on the bottom of the fount. The picket fence globe fell right out onto the concrete floor of the garage and unceremoniously shattered. So to answer your question, I'd say three hours.
