2022 CCF Garage sale thread

#1

Post by outlawmws »

Third year of hosting this I think?

Unfortunately nothing from me to post, but I didn't want others to miss posting the early finds while I get traction...

Since I didn't always make it clear, in past years, Anything goes for what to post, so long as its not store bought new. (Maybe a NOS clean out...)

Items can be sourced from garage, yard, or estate sales, CL, FBMP, even Eprey, etc. Interesting items and stories spice it up. :D

As always, everyone is welcome to post their finds, award "Usucks" and other enableme,,, I mean, encouragement!

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's finds this year. I'm going to try to focus on things I don't already have in my collection... Or way least that's what I've been telling myself...

I'm one that has yet to find something at a typical garage sale. Hopefully that changes. But like Toby I'll hopefully restrain myself to just the items I don't have yet.

Wanted to go to our swap meet but with all the stuff (parties) we had lately I don’t think something good gonna show this weekend. Also was very cold here (28°)

When I retire in July, I will be able to hit all the Friday garage sales. Plus, I am going to start taking Thursday and Fridays off every week soon to get my leave balance down from 700 hours. Don't know if I will find more, but I will have more chances. Going to start carrying a bigger wad of cash, just in case.

Hopefully it will be another great year of finds for our members.

Well, I picked off of Eprey to get this, but I've been wanting one for quite a while. It's called a Porta-shop Model 7 (but they only ever made one model, and only for a few years...) it is essentially a mini Shop Smith in a case. The basis is a 1/2 HP motor very similar to a large hand drill but it lives in a frame and it can be many different tools - Table Saw, Circular saw, disk sander, drill press, the list goes on...

I'll want a hefty inverter for true portability. It can take blades from 5-1/2 to 7-1/4 at least. the drill bits are missing, but those were spade bits so not missing much. I have many and better... Other that that it appears complete.

First find of the year. Antique store purchase. Bought it for the vent, which I hope cleans up better than I think it will.

No GPA, today, but a buddy on Garage Journal put me onto an estate sale a bit outside my normal range, and since there was nothing local, I went. I left a TON of other machinists and mechanics tools and three Thorsen tool boards built into a "tool cabinet". If I were deeper into Thorsen, I might have...
DE1 mhb cop Vise caps Victor Proto Walden RH cap, CF CM Deco.jpg
A 1966 Machinery's handbook -17th edition in very nice shape, Starrett inside mic set, copper vise jaw caps for a 5" vise, (no sign of the vise...), a Victor chipping hammer, Walden and Proto LA, 1/4" ratchets, replacement face for a 1-1/2" rawhide mallet, Craftsman router arbor that will likely go into the Porta-Shop box, the stubby Driver is a Deco, and is 9/32nds drive - my second; an unmarked center finder head for the small 4 or 6" scales, it takes a thin blade scale I found...

A good run.

What's the lowest you'll take for this lantern?

Been looking for one of these for a long time...had to give up finding one in the wild and hit up ebay. Needed a bit of messing around with it (and by that I mean a complete teardown) to get it to run happy, but it's going like gangbusters now!

Biggest problem now is that it works so good I need another one!

I've been using a 228 on my back porch for grilling and it does a good job. However, this thing with half the mantles seems like it makes double the light. It's crazy how well it works. I have a #21 on there now, but will likely try a #99/24-A because it seems like it would power them well.
outlawmws wrote: Thu Jan 13, 2022 5:42 am Nice find! If I found one in the wild I'd likely get it, but won't go the eprey route myself.
Yeah, I struggled with the ebay route. I've missed the precious few that get listed here, and I don't even see regular Kamplite lanterns in these parts. After two years of lookin' I just got impatient. I won't stop looking, but at least I have one now. With as well as it works, i'm surprised it wasn't a more successful lantern. It is loud as hell though. I can hear it inside the house when it's running on the back porch. I've heard a 200a burner nozzle will fit on it and quiet it down. We'll see if that works!

So nothing good on the Yardsale front, but the Porta-Shop finally made it! (It was supposed to be here Thursday but FedEx had it wandering around a bit...)

And they DIDN'T manage to shatter the carry case with rough handling (my one big worry...)

This is about the size of a portable sewing machine, maybe a little bigger, but not much.
Porta-Shop 1case.jpg
Porta-Shop 2case.jpg
What it came with - for the major pieces it's all there, only parts missing are the wrench for taking the chuck off, (pin spanner - I probably have one...) and the extended chuck key (I can modify one -I'm positive I have a spare...)

Other incidentals missing are the instructions/other paperwork, the drill bits; both spade and HHS, countersink, 1" drum sander, and a router/shaper bit. (Ii's weakest use according tot he 1962 Pop Science article) All these I have better... I also separately ordered that copy of the Pop Science Article.

Porta-Shop 3all.jpg
Mostly its clean - the drill body is grimy, and the jig saw adapter, the rest looks unused or barely used.

Here is is in "Drill Press" mode:
Porta-Shop 4-DP.jpg

Last week I received the Aug 1962 Popular Science that has the Porta-Shop Article:
Porta-Shop 5Pop Science1.jpg
Porta-Shop 5Pop Science2.jpg
And the NOS blades I also ordered for the Porta-Shop - 5-1/2" but it can take at least the 7-1/4 - if you omit the table's blade insert, you can go 8" - It came with a carbide 6-1/2" blade.

with 1/2 HP at 3500 RPM that's doable, especially if you use carbide.
Porta-Shop 6 blades.jpg

I spent some time in the garage and found several chuck keys and one fit VERY well, I'm still looking for where I hid my pin spanner collection... but the key stuck in the hole and tapped on and the chuck came right off. Std 3/8-24 chuck, and in fact Craftsman Branded, so probably a replacement - before I extend the key I may see if I have a better chuck.

I also selected a 5/8 wrench for removing the sander disk and the saw arbor.

And lastly I finally found a pic on line of one stowed in the box properly and NOW it fits great! So here is mine with all the bits in place:

I believe I found where the "7" came from for "Model 7" - See that red brace? Stylized 7, right? I'm betting they saw that and went with it!

I have a bit more "Maintenance" to do -the is a vent screen on the front of the motor that is half pushed out, adn the part that is there is plugged. I'll replace that, and replace the hack job someone did on the plug end of the cord with a hospital grade plug.

Other that that, find some drill bits, and other small missing cutters, and its ready for making some sawdust!

She (220F 2/71) is rough but I snagged her below the "going" rate. Asked the seller if the fount held pressure, she said she did not think so. I went ahead and got it. When I got it home I could not get the pump to go in. Well it turns out the pump would not go in because the tank was fully pressurized. I let the pressure out and it pumped up just fine. Knob and cleaner do not turn so there is work to be done.

Ralph, that 220 looks like it sat is a puddle of something? Or were they trying to paint over rust? Maybe time for some custom paint?

The original owner painted the bottom silver. It had a parts safe (which she had already sold, with the wrench no less) and it developed a bit of rim rash. Her father-in-law bought it new and they did not want to just throw it in the trash. I am kind of thinking about knocking down the rust a bit and clear coating it. First order of business is to get it producing light.

My First GPA score for 2022! Someone posted a 413D and I was thinking it was SO close to my dad's 413 from when I was a kid. Only real diff was his had the torpedo tank and his was gold, not red like most torpedoes.

So I did a Google search for 413E and dang, there it was! Gold Torpedo, "towel bar" Cover stand adn all!

Next search was CL and this one popped right up! Nice condition too, almost unused?

Well, not perfect, The cover has been repainted, (poorly prepped; you can see scratches under the paint, and a shape darker... But the rest is REALLY nice and all original!

Pumps, holds pressure, It should fire right up! It needs a new cap gasket at least, but this one IS holding pressure, All the bits move properly, and the genny tip makes a nice hissing when the valve is opened.

So I made an offer, he countered, and we settled!

My first 413, likely my last, but I'm glad its "like dad's" - Bought a piece of my childhood! (again)

I didn't see any dates on the tabs; Is this one too early?
413E 1 open.jpg
Coleman 413E Top.jpg
The inside is amazing:
413E Inside.jpg

You can see the paint on the top latch...
413E Lable-Latch.jpg

Even the bottom is clean!
413E Bottom.jpg

And it came with this copper funnel as an extra - Not Coleman - no branding, but tinned on the inside...

That stove is mint Outlaw! The 413's are Coleman's best user suitcase stoves in my opinion. I'm not a big stovie, but I believe Coleman was well into the red tanks before they started date stamping them. I like the funnel too!

Best finds so far in 2022. Picked these two up for parts for a 5 spot from a friend and then decided they would look better lit. The painted C ended up being a “naked” C, actually neither were “lookers”, but both ran strong.

Some nice score everyone!

Outlaw, that 413 is super clean! I have the same model and its a great stove. I believe the E's were made 54-55. If I'm not mistaken.

Ken, It could be - I have two "resources" I work to, but I know one has gaps and errors, as I've caught a couple:
413 dates.JPG
However both agree to the 54-62?

Cool! I wonder if the red fuel tanks came in towards the late 50's through 62..

Well I finally found something worth sharing. We don't have much luck at estate sales around here, but this one proved fruitful.

Had to buy all the sinker molds to get the 500A, but no biggie.

Image

I think there's a rule or something about this one? Grabbed it to be safe 😁

Image

Kind of excited about the Miller lamp. It cleaned up really nicely. I'll share it next wickie Wednesday.

Image

Cheapy Ford wrench

Image

Tire patch vulcanizer... I've got another variation of this somewhere..

Image

The large Schuyler funnel had it's insert and was too cheap, so a no brainier.

Image

The 500 should clean up decent. I needed another like another hole in the head, but I didn't have an A variant so it's okay 😁

Image

The lighting lever was frozen on the 500, so a quick heat blast, correct fuel cap, and some fuel made it fire up... It needs a complete fettle, but it will be a runner 👍

Image

And of course dad had to try out the sinker molds while I was trying to make us both a living 😁

Image

Hope everyone has a successful picking weekend!! Good luck 👍

So Toby, you really took to heart the "leave no $8 lantern behind!" philosophy! Be VERY careful not to break that globe!

Nice score! - More pics on the funnel, pump and widgit the pump is setting in? Shall casing base?

Pancho, Always nice to find an unfired GPA!

Went out today to run a couple quick errands and since I was driving by our neighborhood antique shop I figured I’d swing in. I’ve only found a few GPA goodies here over the recent years—it’s mostly furniture and glassware, so I didn’t have my hopes up. But, ya gotta look—right?

Made the rounds on the main floor then headed to the dungeon (basement) to poke around through the cobwebs. Within the first ten feet I noticed this high up on the shelves:

A slant was the last thing I expected to find at this place!

It’s barn fresh and seems to be all there. Dated September 1928, has the Reese’s cup wheel, small brim vent with a few extra holes and somewhat rough mica. It’s gonna take an extra large bucket of elbow grease to get this one tuned up!

Sweet! Great find L.J.! FAR better than the skanked 425F I passed on today! (It looked 40 years older!)
