Anybody use wick lanterns for camping?
I was wondering if anyone used wick lanterns for camping. I've been thinking about trying them just for something different.

Well. Don’t expect to just set them up at camp and see perfectly. You’re gonna have to be carrying them around. I like them for camping though. You can put citronella in them and make super cool and portable alternatives to tiki torches

Only filled with tiki torch citronella oil to keep bugs away (think red Adlake RxR lantern).

I always bring one. They make great night lights. Plus, they're bright enough in the middle of the night if you need to take a walk.
However, I would not consider them a substitute for a GPA.

I also use citronella in my wickies at camp. I like how they throw just enough light on a table to see what your doing.

I usually set up a 237, 639 kero's and a Kamplite inverted around the perimeter. Then I use my wickies on the table and a hanger close to the tent. Nothing is set in stone of course. Move where I need them.
Then I have 4-6 smudge pots with citronella in them set up all around the camp. Works good for mosquitos but found out my last trip doesn't work on gnats. Me and Wilton (my pup) was suffering from the gnats. Dam things wouldn't leave his junk alone,,,lol.

Wick lanterns for camping?
They are quiet, and economical. Just enough light for most camp chores, and don't have that weird, alien arc-welder ambience that LED gives off.

Re: Anybody use wick lanterns for camping?
I've played around with them quite a bit. There's a certain novelty to them at first. My conclusion has been that they are dim, messy, and too simple to sustain my interest for very long. Most of the old ones are rust buckets, and the new ones just too cheaply made. I appreciate the history of them, but think of them more as antique display pieces rather than useful camp gear. To each their own though. I'm just more partial to GPAs I guess.
Re: Anybody use wick lanterns for camping?
My pair of 14CP Dietz Air Pilot wickies go with me on every camping trip, but always at least one pressure lantern too. It would take scores of wickies to equal the light output of a gpa, sometimes the light output of a pressure lantern is overwhelming and blinding. My day to day work is complicated which makes me greatly appreciate the simplicity of a wickie, gpa's aren't real complex either but more so than a wickie. The hiss of a GPA is an integral part of camping for me but as night wears on and we're done with activities that require all that light, the silence that comes from shutting down the Coleman lanterns is delightful. At that point in the night the gentle glow of the wickies is adequate and allows us to hear all the little critters nearby more clearly. Battery lanterns have their task too, I don't bring combustion lanterns into the tent anymore. Each has it's role to play and using them for their proper role makes camping more enjoyable for me, wickies included.

Re: Anybody use wick lanterns for camping?
I use gpa's, Dietz wickies, Aladdins and led lights. Each has their place depending on conditions.
And Matt's post above mine sums it up well.
