Totally agree. Vinegar is a good place to start. Thank you.
Congrats on the score! I did this with a Sears a few years ago...

IIRC, I used lacquer thinner and a lot of elbow grease. The original finish should be baked enamel and most rattle can paint will come off of it pretty nicely. Good luck and be sure and post the results!
Michael,

That is very encouraging and the result looks great. I am going to start with vinegar (warmed up) but may need to go to lacquer thinner. Regardless, I will go slow and be very careful.

Pretty cool, your first pics had me going, what's so special? and the last, now we know.
CONGRATS, that's one of a few I'd really want. Keep it up, have you found that 2LQ yet, I don't remember. I know you've found some pretty cool stuff recently.

Been soaking the fount in warm vinegar on and off all day then using a scrubbing sponge. The silver paint is coming off slowly. This is going to take some time, but I am encouraged. Something is sprayed on the fount using a stencil. May explain why it was painted silver? Perhaps it wasn't supposed to leave where it was assigned to? Been soaking it with the lantern intact. Going to have to take it apart to remove the paint on the top, I think.

Slow and steady.
