Amazing find - still trembling

#1

Post by smarti »

Hit one sale this morning near home. As always, asked about lanterns. The guy opened up a shop and pointed to a corner. Saw this and thought "well, at least he has some old ones." Picked it, spun it around, and asked "how much?" Couldn't pay him fast enough. The rest were newer and mostly wickies. He said he had more in another shop but would have to dig them out another day. Going back next Saturday to check them out.

Someone repainted it so it sort of tricked me. Clocked wrong, but who cares. Old paint can be seen through the cracks. Not sure how to tackle that, but I'll figure that out. Had a one-piece cap on it and it let out pressure when removed, so it is solid. It's been an hour and I am still trembling.

Same here, while not common I was thinking I wouldn’t be trembling.

That’s amazing, I would have been so nervous my blood pressure would have spiked.

Scott, I have never actually tried it, especially with something as nice as you have there. Others here have removed poor rattle can paint jobs, leaving most of the original paint underneath, and I'm hoping someone can recommend a good technique.

Nice one. FWIW, it is clocked correctly. The valve was not over the embossing, but you see many that way as they were serviced by the FS for many years.

I bought a Poultry lantern some years ago where the tank had been painted green below the first line of rivets. Patience and several old rags and some acetone gently took the green paint off to find the somewhat faded but visible stencil. Go slow and stop rubbing when you get red on the rag.

Great acquisition!

I did. Got 5 lanterns for $120 which included the USFS and an L228 Slant. That was also about 3 miles from my house probably 12 years ago. I was a novice then, but I knew enough to nab those two.

Thanks, Cole. I sure hope I can remove the spray paint and leave most of the original. The rattle can paint is cracking bad, so maybe it will let go and leave the original intact. Would prefer not to have to repaint it if avoidable. I am not leaving it silver, that is for sure.

It is marked/embossed "USFS" (United States Forest Service). These were made by Coleman specifically for the USFS, and are tough to find. They appeal to Coleman Coleman collectors, USFS collectors, firefighters, and general cool antique collectors.

Scott I removed silver paint from a 200A once with just regular gasoline on a rag... Then I had a 243A with silver paint that I had to break out the acetone... Much more care had to be taken with the acetone.

A buddy removed a coat of paint off of a lamp just using vinegar and a rag. I don't understand this one, but certainly has to do with the paint used. I suggest starting off with the mildest method suggested and working your way up as necessary.

I’m not sure I would try oven cleaner. It would be fine if you are taking paint off nickel plating, but at the least it would fade the red and probably just soften it. I think CF or RUG is a good start with Acetone as needed. Or even paint thinner.

Nice score. It's been my experience with sprayed paint that silver is the easiest to remove, and black the most difficult.

Nice that you live in an area where you can find these FS lanterns. I know I'll never see one in the wild in PA. On the other hand I took advantage of the opertunities on Ebay years ago when they were reasonable and available.

Maybe the one USFS lantern from PA has already been found? I recall reading one was found in your home state.
I'm pretty sure PA has at least one national forest.
So there may be more out there.

Kevin. If one was found here I never heard about it, and it probably was an import from some other state.
Pa. does have one national forest that I know of and isn't that far away from me ( Allegheny National Forest). But Mr. Wilson is much closer to ANF and he will probably get it. LOL.

IIRC, I used lacquer thinner and a lot of elbow grease. The original finish should be baked enamel and most rattle can paint will come off of it pretty nicely. Good luck and be sure and post the results!
