Porcelain alternative test...

#1

Post by Murff »

With the recent attempt at restoring a number of items with Cerakote and Chromex, I had one vent treated with a lower temperature Cerakote coating. This one is black (although it looks kinda brown under the shed lights). This is a 600 to 700 degree coating that is a bit glossier than the usual 2000 degree header Glacier Black.

I will light her up later today and let her run to see how it withstands the heat.

After one hour, looks like color is flat black on top of vent. Will have to check if glossy after it cools.

Worse thing, so far, is the off gassing of the Cerakote. Very stinky.

Uh, oh!

May not be a viable option. I just noticed this pin hole on the vent coating. Harbor Freight infra red thermometer states 512 degrees at the pin hole

Maybe there's a spot of rust or something that got missed.

It's time to buy a small enameling kiln and porcelain your own vents.
Thank you!

Not in my lifetime! There are those that can and then there are those that pay the ones who can when we can't!

Last picture, after 5 hours of burning, snd at least 3 hours of stinking, low temp Cerakote Black is not a viable alternative to porcelain or high heat Glacier Black Cerakote.

Image

As can be seen in the above photo, once the vent cools, the upper part of the vent is now a flat black and resembles a Cerakote Glacier Black vent.

Thanks for the comments.

Well, Murff, thanks for the experiment, anyway. At least all the coating stayed on, right? Except for that one pinhole spot.

Have you had success with other Cerakote product lines?

Oh, yes! The 2000 degree holds up quite nicely:

Image

Burnt Bronze is a Cerakote exhaust header 2000 degree color. Glacier Black is also 2000 degree but is a flat black. I was hoping the lower heat black would look a bit more like porcelain.
