288 found at the trash dump

#1

Post by sailman »

I was late leaving for work this morning and had to go and throw out a bag of trash so I was in a hurry. i throw the trash in the dumpster and turn around to look at the stuff that other people had thrown on the ground. It never amazes me open trash containers, containers empty at that and people just throw their c*** on the ground. Well I guess I was lucky that they did I found this 288 5 of 99. As of now it's holding pressure so we'll see, It looks to be in real good condition all it needs is a good cleanup.

I call that a stroke of luck, for you and the 288.
Thanks,

Sweet deal, Greg. Doesn't look like it ever saw much use. Sounds like it found a good home, too.

Nice. Why would anyone throw that away? Some people are so strange.

Not a bad day at all. From the looks of that generator, I'd say that it may have been lit once.

I have a feeling it was snatched from someone else, and just tossed into the garbage to get rid of evidence. I don’t forsee that with the condition that it is in the original possible owner would have done this.

I got a little bit of time tonight so I decided to pull this lantern apart and give it a quick wipe down and cleaning. I've worked on 288 before but most of those had the Heat shield did this year model come with one or not? I looked inside the tank and it's clean as a whistle and from what I can tell it has a plastic fuel air tube. I don't think this lantern has seen very much use at all the generator looks almost new this is without any cleaning.

Like I said I did a quick white down and threw on some insta-clip mantels just to see how it would run and it lit up with the fuel that was in it but it is pulsing just a little.

These lanterns like to have a full fount of fuel when first lit to reduce pulsing. Full is filling it on a level surface and fuel level just before fount overflows out the fuel filler. Supposedly, when it pulses, its time to refill it.

This year did have a heat shield.

The first lantern I ever bought was a 288 like the one you found. It's dated 3/97 and it has a heat shield. I'm in no way any expert, but I would expect yours should have a heat shield too.

Just a quick note to say that the proper heat shield is stamped: "DO NOT REMOVE" which I plies to me that it's kinda important to have on there!

Anecdotally, I know others have mentioned the heat shield was added to extend life of the O-rings and valve components just under the burner frame, but if Coleman saw fit to spend a little more $$$ to bend up a piece of aluminum as a heat shield, I'm not removing mine.

If you're handy, the bottom of a pop can looks suspiciously similar,...

Does anyone have a picture of the correct heat shield that I would need to purchase I've already looked on OCP's website and they don't have anything listed.

If OCP has the heat shield for a 285, they are the same part, and the same Coleman part number. I had to replace the heat shield on one of my 285 lanterns and I ordered a 288 shield and frame. I even used the frame because it was way better than the one on the lantern.

And the posted above is correct the 285 heat shield should drop in too.

Some 288s will have an air tube clip to keep the heat shield in place. In the 285 and 286 style heat shields, they're retained at the bottom of the burner frame by the leaf springs which support the globe. An unrestrained 288 heat shield may have enough mass to lift up and damage the mantels, as the globe pressure leaves are separate on that model, and riveted to the frame.
