242B valve stem packing

Hi,

The valve stem packing was crumbling on my 242B, along with some other issues. So I ordered the rebuild kit that oldcolemanparts sells.

I've just put in the new valve stem packing, but sadly, it feels a bit loose, and leaks fuel when under pressure. The stem is definitely 1/4" (0.63mm), so the part I was sent is the correct size. I've also made sure to place the retainer so that it fits over the C clip.

Picture of the fitted part is attached.

Any thoughts on what I should do?

Hi there, welcome to the CCF.

Making sure all of the old packing is cleaned out of the threads of the gland nut is important for a good seal. Otherwise, you might need to just tighten the nut some more. It should be smooth with a new packing, but not loose.

Sometimes I’m surprised by how much I need to snug up a new packing before they stop weeping.

Well, I tightened it a lot, and it no longer weeps. No leaks anywhere 8-)

It definitely runs well, but I did notice it needed a couple of pumps every so often to stay really bright.

You did replace the cap gasket with the one in the OCP kit, correct? If so and your losing pressure try loosening the check valve air stem, remove the pump, then back the stem out until you feel the last thread release, turn another 180 degrees and restart it. If not, you may need to remove the upper burner frame assembly, pump up the fount, and dunk test it.

The air stem is double threaded so once it wears a pattern it doesn't always seal unless replaced in the exact same orientation to the check valve. BTW, the main valve is threaded the same way, so one that leaks slightly may seal fine removed, turned 180 degrees, and re-installed.

Welcome from Florida. The little 242 is usually a good running lantern. Yours is burning bright.

You can check for a check valve leak by pumping it up, and lightly place your thumb or finger over the pump shaft hole. If it rises you have a leak. When the air stem is tighten it should stop. If it rises with air stem tight, you have other issues.

A crusty fuel fill opening can cause the cap to leak a little even with a new cap gasket.
