200A black band questions

#1

Post by cyberaktif_72 »

Hello,

Just acquired a 1952 black band 200A lantern. Some questions are as follows...

1) Was the frame also black along with the frame rest (collar)?

2) Was the black band itself steel?

3) Was the fount steel?

4) was the fuel knob red or black?

I was surprised that the fount was steel. Thought it would have been brass with a steel bottom. Looking at the frame it looks like it was black as well. The U tube on the top is tapered, which is I think is different than my other 50's era's 200's.

Here are some pictures...

Yes to all the above and the knob was red with a solid back.

From what I understand, the frame rest is a gloss black while the frame above is a flat black.

I really want to curb the rust but not take any of the paint away doing so. The lantern is in pretty darn good shape. I want to keep it looking the way it is. It does not look to be tampered with.

Nice find, that should clean up nice. I wouldn't refinish any paint. You could try WD-40 sprayed on some 0000 steel wool and go at it with a light touch. The one piece u-tubes sometimes need the tinfoil treatment of some muffler cement to keep them from smelling when running. Can't wait to see it fired up.

I think it will clean up really nice too! It is no shelf queen, just a user in nice shape. I don't think anyone has had this apart. Don't see any wrench or pliers marks. Wish it had the correct globe with it. Will have to look in my parts stash. There are a few different ones but not sure if the correct one is in there.

That original paint is in good shape. I’ve seen a number of black bands on which the black parts were heavily rusted.
I agree with Big Jack, approach the rust with WD-40 and 0000 steel wool.

This is buried in the archives and might be helpful.

When you see your first stress crack, you’ll know it. They start all the way down at the rim and brass founts only.

So, reading the first post that you linked it reads that the black band lanterns started 2/52. If that is the case what I have is a first run lantern. It is dated 2/52. So first year and first month.

Speaking of black Bands: picked a 2-53 200A Black Band up yesterday and noticed no screen. Have not added fuel for naked burn. Anyone know if it would have had one when new? Not sure if my other red single have them or not. Seems I have read at some periods they were not added.

Are you meaning there is no burner screen? Or are you talking the screen in the generator? You would think there would be a burner screen to do more mixing of the air and fuel when it exits. Kind of like your faucet being more aerated with screens in there.

Now when I was doing my reading on that post that was linked earlier it says that the later ones came with a ceramic burner which would not have a screen.

The ceramic burner caps would not have a screen in them. The holes in the ceramic act as the screen/flame arrester.
