Lancaster abominations

#1

Post by Huntaholic »

As some of you may remember, I bought one of these things not knowing what it was, a few years ago. I ended up spending $137 bucks on real petromax parts and took it back to its original glory.
Well lo and behold, my Amish buddies sent me TWO more of these things to fettle and get running for them! The parts to fix one of them should be here today and as bad as I hate to, Im gonna leave it lancasterated.
The other one was really just a box of parts that I can build a lantern out of. Im gonna hold off on that one until I talk to them and see what they want to do with it. If it were mine, id trash all that home made blacksmith crap and put petromax stuff back on it.

OH GEEZ! You guys dont ask for much! I havent taken any yet, thats how much I dislike these cobbled up messes. The ONLY benefit I see is it can use a regular coleman globe, but I absolutely HATE the collar, frame rest, bail, and the way he drills the petromax vent to accept a coleman style nut.
Gimme a little while, the wife has my phone right now trying to figure out how to sync a cellular trail camera to it.

The ONLY good thing he does to these is put a shrader valve in the fount so it can be pumped up that way instead of the plunger.

I have an Amish mod Hipolito myself. Is it crude? Yes, but what i noticed is that the frame is more solid than the original Petromax style one. The original frames were made of fairly light brass, and the posts are just riveted over the ends. The frames on my other Petromaxes are a bit loose as is, just imagine how they would fare in a Amish environment and you can see why they would make new ones out of steel.

Still no pics, dang thing still aint running right either. After church today I may swap some frames around and try to get my air gap closed up some. The adjustment screws are froze and rusted up solid. I already broke one trying to get it free. MAYBE, being homebrew garbage such as the frames are, I can find one that sits a little lower or swap some frame rests around to close that gap up.

I'm still having to use my imagination, but this is starting to sound like one of those adjustments you do with a truck bumper and a floor jack.

Heres a pic. I GIVE UP! I cant fix these things without spending 100s of dollars on them to take them back to petromax stuff. IF THEY WERE MINE ID MAKE PISTOL TARGETS OUT OF THEM!

Your air gap looks reasonable. How's the fuel delivery from the generator with the burner? Straight, consistent fine stream? Air system clear? Fresh fuel? Adequate pressure.

The whole Petromax/Aida/Britelyte/Sea Anchor/Wenzel/China thing can get old quick, but you can make it run. Just step back and try not to think about ventilating them yet.

I replaced the "carburettor" with a brand new one after I took that pic, still no go. Ive got way more already tied up in these things than the amish are gonna want to pay and they still dont run.
